Wearin' O' the Green! While March may mean St. Patty’s day and green beer to some, to those of us in the Temecula Valley wine country, mid-March is the beginning of our greenin’ season. Spring time is here, and after a particularly nice wet winter, the vineyards will soon be sporting some color again.
Known in the industry as ‘bud break’, this rebirthing process of the vines is driven by varietal, vineyard location and climate, but almost always coincides with St. Patrick’s Day. Chardonnay and other white varietals usually bud out first, but arequickly followedby the reds.We will soon be seeing tiny shoots emerge, which in turn will sprout tiny leaves. By this time next month, the shoots begin their rapid growth cycle and may average up to an inch of growth per day! And so the sequence of the vine growing season starts again. It reminds us, too, that bud break is an early indicator of the upcoming harvest (oh my!) which will take place (already!) within about six months. So when you visit us this month, instead of searching for four-leaf clovers, check out the vineyards for the first burst of green. It’s sure to be a wonderful sight! FunIn The SunAfternoons
